Belarusian school students guided by faculty members from BSU have won medals at the 22th International Geography Olympiad (iGeo-2026). Arseniy Turovich, a student from Gymnasium No. 3 named after O.I. Solomova in Hrodna, was awarded a gold medal. Anastasia Sharomet, representing Secondary School No. 37 in Mahilyow, secured a silver medal. Danila Kostylev, a graduate of Gymnasium No. 2 in Orsha, became a bronze medalist. The team was led by Alena Kalmakova, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Geoinformatics at BSU, and her deputy, Dmitry Vorobyov.
Notably, this performance by the students represents one of the best results for our national team in the history of this highly prestigious international geography competition.
The Olympiad concluded on August 17 in Istanbul, Turkey. In total, over 180 school students from 50 countries participated in iGeo-2026. Contestants were tasked with completing a multimedia test, solving theoretical questions, and demonstrating practical skills through geographical case studies.
As a reminder, international geography olympiads are unique among subject-specific competitions because the English-language materials provided to participants are not translated into Russian.
