Polotsk University in the UI GreenMetric ranking
On December 5, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings officially announced its 2025 results. Euphrosyne Polotskaya State University of Polotsk was placed at 863rd position in the global UI GreenMetric ranking, securing second place among 11 higher education institutions in Belarus.
UI GreenMetric assesses the sustainability and environmental performance of universities worldwide. The project was initiated in 2010 by the University of Indonesia and aims to draw the attention of university rectors and stakeholders to focus their efforts on global issues such as climate change, clean energy, water conservation, waste recycling, and green transportation. Achieving these goals requires raising awareness and changing the behavior of a wide range of people.
The ranking is based on various indicators, including:
· The availability of green spaces, the use of renewable energy sources, and environmentally friendly technologies
· Energy consumption and the use of energy-efficient solutions
· Waste management and recycling systems
· The use of eco-friendly transport and initiatives to reduce carbon emissions
· Sustainable development and ecology-related programs and research
The 2025 ranking focuses on the theme of "Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education." It includes 1,745 universities from 105 countries worldwide. Statistics highlight the growing awareness of the importance of sustainability in academia: fifteen years ago, the ranking featured only 95 universities, a number that increased to 1,477 by 2024.
Representatives of Polotsk University actively participate in projects focused on forest restoration and environmental care. Furthermore, the university is dedicated to improving the grounds of its academic buildings and dormitories. The priority is not only to educate students but also to inspire them to take active steps in environmental protection.
