Education in Belarus
Belarus is one of the countries with a high level of Human Development Index.Belarus has always had a high adult literacy rate, which is about 99.7% today. 98% of the population have access to basic, general secondary and vocational education. In fact, in recent years general secondary education has become compulsory in Belarus.
The education system of the Republic of Belarus ensures educational training of students at basic, additional and special education levels.
Basic education includes preschool, general secondary, vocational, secondary, higher and postgraduate training.
Continuing education provides additional training for children and youth as well as adults.
The classification of education levels in the Republic of Belarus corresponds to the International Standard Qualification of Education (ISCED 2011). Thus, the country puts the principle of «lifelong learning» in practice.
In 2014 the Republic of Belarus became a member of the international organization WorldSkills International, and in 2015 joined the European Higher Education Area.
Currently, there are 42 state and 9 private higher education institutions in the Republic of Belarus (33 universities, 10 academies, 8 institutes), and 2 higher religious education institutions. There are 15 educational fields in Belarus. The first cycle of higher education system (Bachelor’s degree) offers 382 specialties and the second one (Master’s degree) provides 331, respectively.
